Patriot Act

After reading these two articles my views on the Patriot Act remains the same and I feel even stronger on my views now than I did before. The Patriot Act was put into place to try to prevent if not eliminate terrorism on the home front but has really began to invade the privacy of many innocent US citizens. This law gives the government agencies the ability to wiretap and look at anybody’s records whether it be online, phone, mail, credit card, and all types of records. How can we have built the foundation of this country on the checks and balances system and then turn around and basically throw it all out the window. I believe this act is becoming unconstitutional and if it is to remain as a law needs to have some previsions added to it so that innocent Americans can live their lives in peace and not have to worry about if they are being spied on by the government. The law has cut down on terrorism but has also invaded many peoples privacy. For example when we watched the video in class of the people in Las Vegas that stayed in the hotel and everyone in the hotel was being spied on the whole time they were there; I don’t think that is right and they should have to have a warrant or some kind of concrete reasoning for taking part in the invasion of privacy, in which privacy being one of the main concepts in which this country was founded upon. Overall I think that the government is stepping out of their boundaries and is beginning to become too powerful for its own good.

Life in 2058

In the year 2058 life will be much more simple than it is today. Most things will be computerized and will happen automatically due to the advancements in technology. Virtually everything will be wireless and voice activated. You could consider life as a mix between the life of one of our favorite cartoons, the Jetsons, mixed with the popular movie series, The Matrix, to make the world in which we will live in.

Every morning people will wake up to an automated alarm clock as we do today but it will wake you up with updates for the day projected in front of your face while having the option to have your favorite play-list playing every morning. If you do not respond to this wake-up call in 15 minutes your bed will fling you out of bed and onto a conveyor belt that will take you to the main controls of your home. Here you will be able to select the breakfast that you would like that morning and also see some of the days updated information that you might have missed while sleeping in. Once selecting your breakfast you will be conveyed to your bathroom where you will be bathed, your teeth will be brushed and your face will be washed. Once this is finished you will be blown dry by a high powered dryer and shipped to your closet in which your clothes for the day will be layed out already ironed and ready to go. Once you are dressed you will be sent to the kitchen to eat your breakfast and set your homes schedule for the day, which will include things like having it automatically be cleaned, clothes being washed, and all other chores that will be needed to be taken care of for the day.

After exiting your home you will be met be your hover car that is powered by an alternative fuel source so help the environment. It will be hands free and will be totally voice activated only to respond to your specific voice patterns. You will tell it your destination and it will get you there safely. Once at your work place everything there will also be voice activated and some jobs may not even need you to come in to work. Some jobs will be offered so that you can do your work at home in a virtual reality experience very similar to that of the matrix and which all of your brain patterns will be able to be used to control your every movement and every thought in your virtual world. But for those who need to go in to work they will also have the opportunity to link into this virtual world to take care of patients or they will have the option of coming to your office.

Once work is over you will return to your home with dinner already available to you and your family due to your “smart house” taking care of all of your homes chores. Entertainment and TV will be shown as 3D holographic images or you can enter them live by plugging yourself into the virtual world. You will have the opportunity to have a personal robot which will serve as a servant for your any and every needs that you may have.

Overall in the year 2058 life will be much easier and stress free due to technology taking care of life’s most tedious tasks that we go through everyday and will leave us more time to do the things that we love to do everyday. Everything will be used virtually and things like currency will be automated as it is beginning to be now. The year 2058 will be a year to see due to technology exponentially doubling every year and I personally cant wait to see what it will really be like!

“Instant Internet Celebrity”

These three articles was about a girl that has put together a series of videos that has become a new fad on YouTube. The articles stated that a girl that had given up school and decided to pursue a movie star life might have gotten her break using the social networking site of YouTube. She has become one of the top three hits on YouTube and doesn’t plan to slow down; she is planning, or at least her producers, to compile all of these videos into a movie. She provided viewers with a character that went through real life problems that everyday teens went through and gave them a sense that they weren’t the only one going through problems; giving viewers someone they could relate to.

I believe that things like YouTube, MySpace and reality TV are giving more and more people the chance to make it in the entertainment industry; it is providing for a totally different field of entertainment that people are used to and is beginning to blow up. I think this is a wonderful thing because it is expanding on what people are used to and giving things a twist. Reality TV shows are similar to old fashioned soap operas but with more realistic events and goals that happen throughout the series. I strongly believe that with these software’s and others in production will provide for opportunities for lots of people to show off their talent or to just flat out just have fun!

“MyLifeBits”

The article that was assigned to us was about a man that has created a device that records every movement and every sound; virtually everything that goes on around him is recorded. He has a device around his neck that takes pictures and a device on his elbow that records every sound. This device was created so he could remember all of his experiences so he will never forget anything that has happened to him in his life. The device records these things and sends them to a massive storage device where it categorizes it and puts all of the files that are related grouped together; so a file on basketball and every image, email, picture, etc. is saved to that group. This device will definitely make great strides in the near future and will probably take place of the camera and tape recorder. It will also help people with horrible memories or chronic diseases that cant remember some things and will provide for a place to go renew past information that could have been lost.

Although this device will help us greatly it can also hender us. This machine will also most likely be used by the government to watch peoples every move and will become a violation of the constitution. It will also serve as a new brain and the brain is a muscle so the fewer and fewer you use it the weaker it becomes so although we will have all of our memories that we might have later forgotten our brains are becoming weaker and weaker due to its inactivity in having to recollect certain things or events. So like most devices this one too has its ups and downs and will hopefully be a device that people will use for the better and not for spying and things of that such.

As far as my research topic for my paper I am still unsure on what I should do. I would really appreciate it if you could give me a few topics that you have in mind that I would be able to choose from.

Social Networking

In the two readings that we were assigned it talked about how social networking is taking major steps in technology, specifically the Internet. The first reading was about how a school district had made their own version of YouTube mixed with Myspace. I think this was an excellent idea because it lets all of their students get used to using technology and the Internet so it becomes more comfortable hence making it easier for them in the future. They also made it so that only their students, parents, and teachers can access this site and all publications must be approved by a teacher. This is a good and bad thing because it may restrict kids to have the freedom to express themselves due to it being approved by a teacher so if a teacher feels as though something you might feel strongly about and express yourself strongly about may not be posted due to a few inappropriate remarks. The school system made easy access so that anybody in the district that has access to a computer with the Internet has access to the website regardless of its make, year, and model it may be.

The second reading was about how Second Life and World of Warcraft are taking big strides in the business field and may become apart of peoples everyday jobs. People believe that these social networking games are great because of it having realistic sites and environments in which people interact. They also spoke of it taking strides in the scientific field also, well at least second life. The spoke of even trying to make the currency in the game translate to currency in the real world and vise versa…I personally see a problem with that because I really couldn’t see how that would work out without having any problems because computer hackers could easily steal peoples currency just as they steal peoples identities. But overall I believe that these things will have an impact on our lives eventually when all the kinks finally get ironed out on some of these problems that may arise.

The Information Age

The article that we were assigned was about how the times are changing and how people are going from using the printing press to things such as the Internet. I believe that this is true and that times are definitely changing and we need to find easier and more efficient ways of dealing with things. The computer was a perfect invention for storing, collecting, and compiling data in large quantities…so why not begin to use it. It also takes away the hassle and searching through countless pages of materials, when you can just type in a keyword and all available topics will show up in the case of a computer. Computers just provide for a more convenient way to communicate than the printing press, although it is very useful in some cases but in others it would be best to just have it in a place where everyone can see it without the waste of paper and ink.

The books author goes in saying that people will eventually be using strictly computers which will have access to virtually anything and everything, specifically books, articles, periodicals, etc. This is also a good idea which the author states that if we were to put all of the books and such onto the Internet it will provide for access to things that many people didn’t have access to before. People may read books that they would normally not read because now they have access to it or have the opportunity to see it and become interested in it. It will also make books more informative because the each word of the book could have the capability to have a link to describe it for clarification. As you see many companies doing now they are beginning to get into business with major Internet networks such as Google, Yahoo, and Amazon.

I feel as though these are great ideas that are being put into affect as we talk about it. Since many of our youth are growing up using more and more technology every year it is best that we provide useful information for them to have access to, instead of just them playing mindless games all day. Although it is a good idea it may cause problems for many companies to make money since they aren’t having people buy the books and are giving them access to them for free on the Internet. This may cause a problem and many companies may go bankrupt…but more than likely they will figure out some way to try to make you pay a small fee to access these wonderful resources.
